XXL Magazine #40 : Birdman Cover

I like the layout of the cover but not a big fan of Cash Money’s Baby. Some very good sections in this magazine including a look back at issues and the greatest misses including Gloria Velez and her nasty toes they shot lol.

Rating: 7.5/10

Good cover with Kurupt, Ghostface is on the alternative cover. Love the Makaveli Branded Clothing ad with Scarface. I still see Benzino ads in the magazine, is this still during that time? Dead Prez article inside.

Hip Hop Quotable: Saigon – Shok TV

Unsigned Hype: Jay Electronica

The Source Magazine #227 : Barack Obama Cover

Respect for Obama, but with every magazine and their momma’s putting him on covers, it would have been nice to see someone like Andre 3000, Immortal Technique, or Nipsey Hussle grace the cover this month. The political heavy issue was like reading a Newsweek Hip-Hop 101 issue.

Hip Hop Quotable : Murs – The Science

Unsigned Hype: LMFAO (?)

Rating: 4.0/10

The Source Magazine #174 : Hip-Hop Behind Bars Cover

Bullshit cover with a hypocritical editorial about the cover. Kanye West – College Dropout gets 4 1/2 mics.

Unsigned Hype: Joell Ortiz

Hip Hop Quotable: Kanye West – All Falls Down

Rating: 4.0/10

Rating: 7.5/10

Murder Dog Magazine Vol.7 No.5 : Too Short Cover

You really can’t hate on the cover with Bay Area Rap Legend Too Short. Cap 1 inside, never really blew up like I thought he would. Interesting letter to the editor from Jamal Diggs while in prison giving some insight to Mac Dre, Jamal Diggs would go on to be J-Diggs of Thizz Nation. Articles on M.O.P. and Richie Rich.

Rating: 8.0/10

Elemental Magazine #66 : Ras Kass Cover

I like to see Ras Kass on the cover, but not this close. His subculture cover was great, this one not so much. Cormega – The Testament ad is very nice. Graffiti section is very good.

Sacramento’s Smigg Dirtee graces the cover. Frontline article inside and Sway and Tech get a LRG ad.

Rating: 6.5/10

XXL Magazine #52 : Afeni Shakur Cover

Interesting to put Afeni Shakur on the cover, not sure if I like it or not. DMX advertisement for Grand Champ, that album is when X went downhill. Kanye in a LRG clothing ad? Issue is 2pac heavy but also has a good article on The Lox.

Rating: 6.5/10

Boss Status Magazine #3 : Gold Toes Cover

Did you notice the big ass gloves Gold Toes has on? For being an independent magazine, there is a good section of women from Ramona Pilon, Michille Gale, and Bella Eve posing with a whip, magnum, and a bottle of Patron.  Article on King George and Cali Pooh.

Props to Elemental for putting Devin The Dude on the cover. “Things Taht Helped Us Get Through The Month” is always a fun read with this month having an Ebay auction for a day with Professor X, and how to get Autographs, pretty funny read. Articles on Devin, The Alkoholiks, and Brand Nubian.

Rating: 8.5/10

HHC Hip Hop Connection Magazine #51 : Eazy-E Cover

One of those covers with a gun, but a bit eerie with Eazy in a straight jacket. The more I look at this cover, the more I realize that HHC used this same photo but a close up in a later issue when he died. I could be wrong, have to check my stash. Article with Eazy is during the time period when he was feuding with Dre and was getting ready to release his album “Temporary Insanity”.

Rating: 5.5/10

916 Magazine November 2005 : Jay Vee Cover

Sacramento independent magazine with local artists inside. Most of the artists are unknown outside of the Sacramento area but it does have some interesting articles like the one on Education Secretary William Bennett “If you wanted to reduce crime…you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down”. Kayla “Ready” Platsis is featured in the eye candy section which is not bad considering it’s a local magazine.

Rating: 6.5/10

Rating: 7.0/10

Roots Magazine #30 : Geto Boys Tela Yukmouth Cover

Love this cover, giving some shine to Yukmouth and Tela. Article on the release of the double album from 2pac – Greatest Hits. As I am going through some great articles on DJ Quik and Redman, I realize how good this magazine is, even with all the grammatical errors.

Rating: 8.5/10

This Magazine is garbage, I will not review this trash for too many reasons to name.

Sister 2 Sister Magazine May 2000 : Mack 10 Cover

Ok, not much here but the cover and an interview with Juvenile. We will skip the T-Boz and her Romance with Mack-10 article.

Spice! Magazine #41 : Ice Cube Cover

Not many articles except for MC Eiht. The best part is the color photos. Includes KRS-One, Ice Cube with Dr. Dre, Kid Sensation (who looks like Too short), and Snoop Dogg.

Rating: 7.5/10

Black Beat Magazine May 2000 : T-Boz Cover

Ok, not going to put every Black Beat Magazine on, but if you got articles on Raekwon and Q-Tip, I’ll give it a shot. Also a Nas article and Eve with all the Ruff Ryders in photos.

Rating: 7.0/10

HHC Hip Hop Connection Magazine #35 : MC Ren Cover

MC Ren on the cover of a magazine is pretty rare by himself. UK version of Ice Cube’s Death Certificate is 2 tracks less without Black Korea and No Vaseline. Right in the middle of Cube going solo and Dre starting to show signs of leaving, there is a lot of insight in this issue regarding N.W.A. members.

Rating: 8.5/10

Black Beat Magazine September 1995 : Jodeci Cover

Rappin’ 4-Tay and Grand Puba are featured inside.

Rating: 3.5/10

Sister 2 Sister Magazine February 2000 : Eve Cover

I won’t make it a habit of putting a bunch of these magazines on, but Eve’s on the cover of this one. Not much else inside but an ugly blurry centerfold photo of Eve in a backyard with a yellow sprinkler, go figure.

Rating: 5.5/10

Rap Pages Magazine September 1995 : Kool G Rap Cover

Now this is a cover. I’m trying to think if I’ve seen a better Rap Pages Cover? Maybe the ODB one? Only time will tell as I list them on the site from my collection. ODB Advertisement and Master P right before he started blowing up. Articles on some of my favorites, Grand Puba and The Luniz. This is one of those elite issues overall.

Rating: 7.5/10

Industry Insider Magazine #17 : Snoop Doggy Dogg Cover

Ugly cover, ugly (Lakers) colors, and it’s still strange to see Snoop with a No Limit Chain.  Cool shot of the artists on the Smokin’ Grooves Experience including Wyclef, Public Enemy, Canibus, and Busta Rhymes. Bad Azz – Word on tha Streetz Advertisement.

Rating: 5.0/10

Notorious Magazine #3 : Jennifer Lopez Cover

Is it even possible to hate on a cover that has a naked J-Lo? Already my favorite cover. Diddy tried to make this a high end magazine, he left out a lot of rap related articles but sprinkled in an article on E-40 and some advertisements.

Rating: 8.0/10

Right On! Magazine August 1995 : Naughty By Nature Cover

Naughty by Nature on the cover. Plenty of old school photos of Lords of the Underground, DJ Red Alert and Dallas Austin. Includes “Win A Gift Pack From Quo” haha. How old is Funkmaster Flex? He looks old as hell already in this magazine from 95.

Rating: 8.0/10

DMR Dance Music Report Magazine 1991 : LL Cool J Cover

Rappers don’t come up very often on the cover of this magazine. LL Cool J’s Mama Said Knock You Out was #2 on the charts behind EPMD’s Business As Usual Album. #37? H.W.A. (Hoes with attitude) – Living In the Hoe House. One of the worst albums ever.

Raiting: 7.5/10

HHC Hip Hop Connection Magazine #40 : Pete Rock & CL Smooth Cover

Rating: 7.0/10

Blaze Magazine #12 : Dr. Dre Snoop Doggy Dogg Cover

So I’m gonna say the two are in doctor scrubs, never paid to close of attention to the cover. This issue was dedicated to the 90’s and had a lot of great articles. My favorite was Top 5….. Looks That Should bE Left In This Millennium, Overused Props and Concepts in 90’s Rap Videos, Rawest Record Beefs of the 90’s and such. Overall one of Blaze’s most complete issue.

Rating: 8.5/10

Showcase Magazine #18 : T.W.D.Y. LL Cool J Cover

Three-6 Mafia gets some recognition as Sippin’ on Some Syrup comes out. Section tells of all the behind the scenes crap happening at the Source Awards.  Not much information in this issue except for a few interesting advertisements.

Rating: 5.5/10

The Bomb Magazine #31 : 8th Wonder Cover

Billy Jam has a section called “Thought’s While Takin A Shit” and yes there is a picture of “someone” doing just that. Interesting article on “what if rap music was for pure fun and not for money” Funny thing is that some of the stuff he talks about is how the industry is now with record labels dying. M.O.P. article.

Rating: 7.5/10

Dub Magazine #60 : Ice Cube Tap Out Cover

Nothing Hip-Hop about this issue except for the cover and a small article on Cube and the car expo he was at. Nice to see a tribute to Mask from Tapout.

Rating: 3.5/10

Showcase Magazine #14 : Bone Thugs-N-Harmony Papa Reu Cover

This has to be my favorite Showcase Magazine Cover. Tribute article to Big Pun. Interesting cover for Deco-D – Surgery On Tha Game. Just google it and let me know what the hell is going on.

Rating: 9.0/10

Roots Magazine #32 : Big Mike Cover

Nice to see Big Mike on a cover, I think I’ve only seen him on the cover of a Rap Pages Magazine. Interesting article on Destiny’s Child when they had the original members, they were in Oakland with Dwayne Wiggins, and Beyonce was Beyounce’. Gang starr and B.G. have articles inside.

Rating: 7.5/10

The Illtip Magazine #34 : Mr. Kee Cover

Nice cover. X-Raided and Keak Da Sneak advertisements inside. Huge amount of ads and not enough articles.

Rating: 4.5/10

Xplosive Magazine #7 : Ashanti Mac Dre & Da Unda Dogg Cover

Beautiful Ashanti on one side and the bay area legend Mac Dre on the other side. Story on the up and coming rapper Yo Gotti and the late rapper Seagram.

Rating: 8.0/10

XXL Magazine #38 : Foxy Brown Cover

Almost a perfect cover except for the fact that her family is in the photo with her. This issue was not good, from the Tupac with Faith rumors to the Baby Beesh (Baby Bash) advertisement, there was nothing interesting in this issue. The last page at least gave tribute to Left Eye Lopez.

Rating: 4.0/10

XXL Magazine #141 : Lil Wayne Cover

I’m not feeling the cover, but I think it has more to do with the fact that I’m not a lil wayne fan. Articles on Odd Future and B.o.B. are the only interesting things in this issue.

Rating: 4.5/10

Word Up! Magazine : Fall Preview ’97 Cover

Issue is R&B heavy but still has information about the deaths of Biggie and Pac. Article on the Wu-Tangs upcoming double album Forever. Note: My issue is not complete, the first page is missing and that is the photo that should be popping out of the middle of the magazine in the circle, instead you got a piece of Shaq from “Steel”. Also missing probably the most crucial part of the magazine, BTNH poster.

Rating: 6.0/10

XXL Magazine #83 : Jay-Z Cover

Pretty good cover of Jay-Z recreating his Reasonable Doubt Cover shoot. Great advertisement for Rhymefest’s Blue Collar CD. Thought I would mention Akira from the Eye Candy section is hot.

Rating: 8.0/10

The Source Magazine #113 : Puffy Russell Simmons Master P Cover

What an ugly cover, I get why they are on the cover, but it’s still ugly. Luckily the issue is saved with the year in review and the thickness of the magazine. Hip-Hop Quotable Dopest Rhyme of the Year was Big Pun – Dream Shatterer. Side note, Master P went 4X Platinum with MP Da Last Don that year.

Rating: 7.5/10

The Source Magazine #248 : Jay-Z Cover

Jay-Z and his blueprint cover. This issue is very thin. Things I liked: Cope2 Graffiti, 2 Chainz, Sean P, and Tech N9Ne. Things I didn’t like: Paully D. Hip-Hop Quotbale Royce Da 5’9″ – Legendary. Unsigned Hype was Ariez Onasis.

Rating: 8.0/10

XXL Magazine #17 : Eminem Cover

Interesting white on white cover. Em’s first XXL cover. Now Em was beefing with XXL and they still put him on the cover. Funny, years later the Source did the same move with 50 Cent when he was beefing with Benzino. Melissa Ford was the Eye Candy in this issue.

Rating: 8.5/10

XXL Magazine #9 : Ja Rule DMX Jay-Z Cover

Of course this is one of my favorite XXL Covers. Ja Rule when he was good, Jay-Z and DMX. Wouldn’t that have been nice to see them all do an album together? I included the back cover, as they tried the old Ice-T Front & Back photo. I think G-Unit did this also in a more recent XXL magazine. Best part was XXL’s own awards. Best New Artist: Black Star, Worst New Artist: Harlem World, Most Bootlegged : Nas, The Worst Skit of the Year Award: The Birth of Foxy Brown.

Rating: 9.0/10

XXL Magazine Special Edition 2005 : Hot 97 Summer Jam Cover

Pretty straight forward, issue is like a program guide to the concert with very small articles about artists you already know and facts you probably already know. Very nice glossy thick paper.

Rating: 7.5/10

Murder Dog Magazine Vol.14 No.4 : Slim Thug Cover

Boss Hogg Outlawz? Not sure about that one. Dang, 19 pages of advertisement before I got to the Table of Contents. Murder Dog be making money. Here’s a section that I like.. Techinical Question? Ask Amplive. Amplive is part of Zion I, who is one of my favorite Hip-Hop groups. Good Messy Marv article, bad Omar Cruz article.

Rating: 6.5/10

Boss Status Magazine #1 : Malika Cover

As described by the Editor of the magazine, it was very groundbreaking to put a girl rapper on our debut issue. Malika was featured on P.Diddy’s making the band. Since it is a Network Guide to the bay, it is light on the articles but heavy on advertisements and contacts.

Rating: 8.0/10

Down Magazine #2 : Bun B Cover

It’s always good when Bun B is on the cover of a magazine. Youngbloodz have a good article. They have a section called “Roots” Other MC’s Connections to the South. Very good article on Nate Dogg and why he comes back to visit but won’t live in Clarksdale, Mississippi due to the racism he has seen.

Rating: 8.0/10

Don Diva Magazine #23 : Juelz Santana & Supreme Team Cover

Good articles on 50 vs Murder Inc. , Juelz Santana, and Twista. Good shopping section of everything a Don should have. The Sticky Pages section has some nasty looking girls in it. There’s girls at the community college that look better than these chicks.

Rating: 5.5/10

Mass Appeal Magazine #32 : Fat Joe Cover

Very impressive issue. Cover of Fat Joe not bad.  Two of my favorite sections in this issue have to be Dame Dash and Rugged Man together and Remembering ODB. I also liked the article on rap behind bars where they talk about albums and artists recording behind bars, Mac Dre, X-Raided, Tony Yayo, Lifers Group and such.

Rating: 8.5/10

Industry Insider Magazine #24 : Big Pun Cover

This is a great cover capturing the late Big Pun standing tall representing with his Puerto Rican flag.  Articles on Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, and Cypress Hill. Once again, another magazine has a section called “Confessions”. Am I tripping? or is this just plain stupid? At least the other mag has a girl editor, what’s Chang’s excuse?

Rating: 8.0/10

Elemental Magazine #59 : The Game Cover

Best cover of The Game I have seen….. Covering half his face … OOH! Naw, but I respect The Game’s Lyrics. Interesting to hear him talk about G-Unit before 50 booted him. One of my favorite groups is featured in this issue also, Smif-N-Wessun.

Rating: 7.5/10

Xplosive Magazine #10 : Outkast Cover

Cover is like a collage, so it doesn’t put any emotions in my head. Love the article and advertisements for Ganxsta Nip’s album. Articles on Yukmouth, DMX, Beyonce, and my man Deebo.

Rating: 7.0/10

Elemental Magazine #55 : Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf Cover

Cover has Peanut Butter Wolf and the late San Jose boy Charizma. It also reminds me of the Seattle Supersonics Home Jersey. Great story on Peanut Butter Wolf and what he’s doing. Also like the ad for Dizzee Rascals’ Boy In Da Corner.

Rating: 8.0/10

The Illtip Magazine #36 : Corporate Thugs Cover

What is going on with this cover? There’s a snake floating in mid air, aligator under a chair, money photoshoped on table, and a fireplace in the background. In fairness to Illtip Mag, the design is from their album cover, but damn, to put it fully on the cover?

Rating: 3.5/10

Elemental Magazine #54 : Saigon Cover

Cover is not one of Elementals best. Nice Jaylib advertisement for J Dilla & Madlib Collab. Yikes! Starts off with Tupac, Biggie, Nas, Big L, Jay-Z and says “Saigon is next”. Like the article on Bobbito Garcia.

Rating: 6.0/10

Xplosive Magazine #5 : The Click & E-40 Cover

The Mossie gets some love on the cover of this bay area magazine.  Article on Cellski, Rich The Factor, and Guce. Although it is West heavy, there are articles on the St. Lunatics, Lil Mo, and Jadakiss.

Rating: 8.5/10

The Illtip Magazine #38 : Riderlife Cover

Decent cover. Dogday Records is getting shelled in this issue, not only by the Illtip Magazine but from Sir Dyno and the interviewer. Would be interesting to find out the inside scoop. Pretty light on articles of any significance, but some nice advertisements.

Rating: 6.0/10

Ozone Magazine #32 : Nivea & Mike Jones Cover

That is one contrasting cover, the beautiful Nivea and Khia’s ugly ass. BTW, don’t read her stupid Q&A, I took the punishment for all of you. I like the hustle and independent look of Ozone, but one of the items that I have a problem getting past is a section that they run called “Groupie Confessions”. Who’s that for? only a select few who read this magazine would be interested in that? Editor Julia Beverly needs to step her game up.

Rating: 4.5/10

Elemental Magazine #56 : Mobb Deep Cover

I’m not sure what I think of this cover. It’s either crazy dope, or really stupid. Mobb Deep with Tubs? Beanie Sigel has one of the nicest clothing advertisements for State Property. Articles on Kanye West, Slick Rick, and Cee-Lo as he becomes Cee-Lo Green instead of just the fat one from Goodie Mobb.

Rating: 7.0/10

Hoodstar Magazine #2 : Too Short Cover

Nice layout on the cover and a hip hop icon in Too Short. This magazine is an independent magazine but really put together very nicely. It’s a shame it only focuses on the west coast as it has everything, from politics, music, fashion, and hot eye candy.

Rating: 8.5/10

Ozone Magazine #31 : Boyz N Da Hood & Ms Cherry

Man, this issue almost burned my eyes it’s so bright! They must use an extra glossy paper. Is it me or does Ms Cherry look like Babs from Diddy’s reality show? I love the trend of a digital belt buckles : Fully Programmable, Battery Included, and No CPU Needed. CD review by ADG gives Serious – Lord of Crunk CD “one blunt” out of 5. “This is an ugly CD, but even the packaging is better than the content.”

Rating: 8.0/10

XXL Magazine #20 : Mystikal Cover

Hip-Hop Quotable Foxy Brown on 7:30. Unsigned Hype Mr. Varr

Rating: 6.5/10

The Source Magazine #37 : DJ Quik Cover

You got to love the feathered hair on Quik. Editor is up in arms over Ice-T pulling Cop Killer off his cd. States “the beginning of the end of rap music” I wonder if he would have believed Ice-T’s role on T.V. 20 years later. Hip-Hop Quotable was B-Real – Real Estate. Unsigned Hype was Capital Tax.

Rating: 8.0/10

Elements Magazine Winter 1996 : Mobb Deep Cover

Small underground magazine with Mobb Deep on the cover. Articles on M.O.P. , Mobb Deep, and Jeru The Damaja. I love the Canadian UBC first page which says in fine print “Element’s had some personnel problems and someone got dissed. We had to beat down FreestyleCrazee because aside from his weak ass interview with Ghost and Cap, we found out he was tryin’ to sell elements mags out for like two bucks or something to a couple of stupid kids out in Surrey who thought it was the latest issue of Prop$. AND he was on some cock blockin’ shit tellin’ this girl about some shit that I had mistakenly let out regarding my extra curricular activities involvin’ my crew and…shit, almost did it again. Fuckin’ punk. So he got dissed.”

Rating: 9.0/10

The Source Magazine #42 : Naughty By Nature Cover

Love this cover, but one thing I never noticed after all these years… Treach has a Turbo Craftsman Chainsaw. Hip Hop Quotable was Snoop Doggy Dogg – Stranded on Death Row. Unsigened Hype was The Red Eye Crew.

Rating: 8.0/10

Woo-Haa! Magazine Summer 1998 : Busta Rhymes Cover

I wonder what part Busta Rhymes has in this German Magazine? Isn’t Woo-Haa his saying? Half the magazine is in German and the American rappers interviews are in English. Has Busta Rhymes, Jurassic 5, and Company Flow. Interesting, when they show the new cover for the upcoming DMX – It’s Dark and Hell is Hot album, it has him in the projects with his dogs.

Rating: 8.5/10

South West Bound Magazine #4 : DJ Warrior, Strong, Fingaz & More

Independent magazine in full color with West Coast Mixtape Kings on the cover. A lot of Bay area flavor in this issue with The Federation, Deebo, and a full two pages of all of Mac Dre’s albums. Last, there is a hot rapper named Crystal in lingerie on train tracks??

The Source Magazine #88 : Power Players Cover

*One of these things… is not like the other* Cover is of some of the power players of 1996, most are hip hop icons except for Crucial Conflict who had the hit “Hey” or “Hay”, not sure. Year in review issue has just about everything in 1996 covered, from a timeline, to best of, and videos of the year. Hip-Hop Quotable is Nas – I Gave You Power. No Unsigned Hype.

Rating: 7.5/10

The Source Magazine #90 : KRS-One Cover

I’m digging the KRS-One cover, the editorial is dedicated to informing how Mics are given in the record report. Advertisement reminded me that my cousin owes me when I told him not to put “T.W.I.S.M.” on his arm. Hip Hop Quotable was Pharoahe Monch on Metal Thangz. Unsigned Hype was Rawcotiks.

Straight No Chaser Magazine #14 : A Tribe Called Quest Cover

Not very often you get a hip-hop artist on the cover of this European magazines, but this one is super nice.  Article on Tribe and that’s about it.

XXL Magazine Special 2004: Hot 97 Summer Jam Cover

More of a program for the event than a xxl magazine issue. Very light on articles with lots of photos of the performers.

The Source Magazine #35 : Too Short Cover

I think I just like the cover because Too Short’s on it, it’s not exactly well put together. The first two clothing ad’s catch my eye, Cross Colours with those funky bright colors, and yes, I had a bright green jacket. The second ad is for a clothing line called DMZ Safe Zone, it’s as close to porn as you can get without it being called that. One of my favorite group names and album name has to be Lil Bastards with the album Bitch Get A Job! Hip-Hop Quotable is Pete Rock – For Pete’s Sake. Unsigned Hype is not yet in the Source.

SubCulture Magazine 1997

Cover is white…. not much more, I get it, but it’s still ugly. Saved by the article on The Hieroglyphics Crew and Organized Konfusion.

The Source Magazine #132 : LL Cool J Cover

Canibus and Cool J were fighting over that ugly tattoo? Hate to say it but i’m not a big LL fan, not bad with his first two albums. This issue is 368 pages deep, can’t even fit it in a regular magazine cover like the rest of my collection. Huge amount of info. Hip Hop Quotable is LL Cool J – Where I Belong and the Unsigned Hype was Red Clay.

XXL Magazine #48 : Ja Rule Irv Gotti Cover

The beginning of the end for these two. Still not sure to this day how I feel about Ja. His first album is a classic, but 50 just man handled him. Dead Prez in this issue, rest is pretty slim.

Word Up! Magazine 1997 : Notorious B.I.G. Cover

A Word Up special tribute to Biggie. Huge amount of Biggie and anyone associated with him such as Tupac, Diddy, Junior Mafia. Funny that they put the two center photos next to each other are Faith and Lil Kim.
