Soul II Soul – Back To Life on the opening scene to the movie Belly. Produced by Hype Williams, who seemed to be pushing out music videos every week at that time.
Man, every time I see Jermaine Dupri, Bow Wow and such on the cover of magazines makes me think, “you couldn’t find anyone else?” Whatever case you want to make for them, I ain’t buying. Look at all the headlines on this cover, anyone of those guys would have made a better cover. I would even take Tupac’s suspected killer Orlando Anderson on the cover than this crap. Issue is Down South Heavy, you see the breakup of Death Row in this issue, and you start to see the beginning of DMX.
Of course this is one of my favorite XXL Covers. Ja Rule when he was good, Jay-Z and DMX. Wouldn’t that have been nice to see them all do an album together? I included the back cover, as they tried the old Ice-T Front & Back photo. I think G-Unit did this also in a more recent XXL magazine. Best part was XXL’s own awards. Best New Artist: Black Star, Worst New Artist: Harlem World, Most Bootlegged : Nas, The Worst Skit of the Year Award: The Birth of Foxy Brown.
Expected albums of the summer include: DMX – Great Depression (not bad), Tha Eastsidaz – Duces and Trayzs (dissapointing), Jadakiss – Kiss the game Goodbye (pretty good), D-12 – Devil’s Night (didn’t like), and St. Lunatics – Free City (surprisingly good). Hip-Hop Quotable Foxy Brown on 7:30. Unsigned Hype Mr. Varr
