Young Jeezy on the cover of XXL for the first time with the Puffy toothpick in his mouth. Akon’s Konvict clothing is making a big push in this issue, kind of ugly mixing skater checkers with Ed Hardy looking prints. Interesting list of words being censored on the radio: Lil Wayne Lolipop, Juicy, Lumps, Top, Bottom. Plies Bust It Baby Panties, Wet-Wet and G-Unit’s I Like the Way She Do It, Back into it, drop it low, and ass drop. Did XXL just waste a page on Paul Walls marriage to Crystal? Interesting article on the Hipster movement, if you are interested in the word Hipster as defined in Norman Mailers 1950’s essay “The White Negro” it’s a cool read, this article, not so much. XXL seems to be going through the motions with this issue.
We going new school for this issue. Uh, so Schoolboy Q is upset that XXL put “Kendrick Lamar & Black Hippy” on the cover instead of just Black Hippy. No disrespect to Jay Rock, but ever hear of D12? Well you probably wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for Em. Eminem sold that group into the spotlight and without Kendrick I’m pretty sure the album wouldn’t have that much push. So Q, don’t get your panties in a bunch. Lil Wayne is promoting some ugly ass cheetah print shoes called “The Chimera” by Supra. A Chimera is a mix of a Goat, Lion, and Snake tail, these shoes look like a mix of Cheetah, RuPaul, and Blindness. I like Lil Wayne better when he was a little skinny ghetto boy who use to kiss his dad. Devin The Dude, when talking about legalizing weed says that in the 50’s people thought that weed would make mexicans and black people kill and white women fall in love with black people. Any truth to this or is Devin just making shit up as he rolls another one?
How about this gem from 2 Chainz in the section for artists to Step Your Rap Game Up, one of the dumbest lines I’ve heard in a bit. “Rest In Peace To All The Soldiers That Died In The Service/ I Died In Her Cervix”
Pretty nice two page foldout cover including some of Def Jams former stars. No matter what your feelings are about Def Jam, you have to give them props for some of the most iconic groups, artists, and albums. 3 page list of all of Def Jams albums. Here is a sample of some of my favorite:
- Public Enemy – Yo! Bum Rush The Show
- EPMD – Business As Usual
- Jay-Z – Vol. 2 Hard Knock Life
- Redman – Whut? Thee Album
- South Central Cartel – ‘N Gatz We Truss
- Warren G – Regulate… G Funk Era
- Jayo Felony – Take A Ride
- Richie Rich – Seasoned Veteran
- DMX – It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot
- Ja Rule – Venni Vetti Vecci
- DMX – And The There Was X
- Ludacris – Word of Mouf
- Kanye West – College Dropout
This issue had three covers, including a nicer Canibus cover and a worst cover with R. Kelly on it. They got a section where they went to Roger Pratt on NYC’s Houston St. to predict stuff in hip hop, he came back with Latrell will kill his coach! lol. XXL’s Eye Candy is Jennifer Lopez.
Crazy to remember all the other covers with Dr in the background, such as the Deep Cover Source cover with Snoop, 50 Cent & Eminem XXL cover. Could it be Timbo’s are back in style? NY’s Joey Bada$$ is being deemed the next Nas or Big L. I’ll edit this page next year to see how that turns out. Lot’s of list and issue shows all back issues of XXL. To top off the issue the all-time great Eye Candy is shown, Rose Acosta.
Nice cover of the legend. Is this the same outfit with the white background that The Source used in their magazine also? Sadat X in a Snoop Dogg Clothing ad. Article on Crooked I. Thick issue with not much more except for the special section on Biggie and the making of Life After Death.
Almost a perfect cover except for the fact that her family is in the photo with her. This issue was not good, from the Tupac with Faith rumors to the Baby Beesh (Baby Bash) advertisement, there was nothing interesting in this issue. The last page at least gave tribute to Left Eye Lopez.
Of course this is one of my favorite XXL Covers. Ja Rule when he was good, Jay-Z and DMX. Wouldn’t that have been nice to see them all do an album together? I included the back cover, as they tried the old Ice-T Front & Back photo. I think G-Unit did this also in a more recent XXL magazine. Best part was XXL’s own awards. Best New Artist: Black Star, Worst New Artist: Harlem World, Most Bootlegged : Nas, The Worst Skit of the Year Award: The Birth of Foxy Brown.
So it’s been enough time to see how this freshman class is doing. Personally, I like Big K.R.I.T. and Kendrick Lamar. Diggy Simmons i’m not feeling. Yelawolf will never be on my list, I just can’t concentrate on his music after the story a close friend told me about his gross sexual fetish. Also includes Meek Mill, Cyhi The Prynce, Lil Twist, Fred The Godson, Mac Miller, YG, and Lil B. Great piece on the 2010 class, which included my man Nipsey Hussle, J. Cole, Freddie Gibbs, Jay Rock, and Wiz Khalifa.
